Fitness First

Author: SmartDiets
July 6, 2011

Physical fitness refers to a person’s overall measure of physical, bodily health; and is typically made up of things such as cardiovascular endurance and body composition, as well as overall muscular strength and stamina. There are different types of POW accessories that are designed to help you maintain your physical fitness whether you are training or competing. Their products range from apparel to books and DVD’s to make sure that you are guided every step of the way.

Physical fitness is often broken down into two categories which are general fitness and specific fitness. General fitness refers to one’s overall levels of health, including overall endurance. Specific fitness refers to one’s ability to perform specific physical tasks, as related to one’s occupation or when playing a specific sport. There is actually no standard definition for physical fitness, and cardiovascular endurance as well as body composition are often used to determine whether one is physically fit or not.

Challenging Balance

Author: SmartDiets
June 10, 2011

This tool was originally produced for skiers. The balance board was used to practice the skills of surfers and skiers at night or off season. It develops balance, motor coordination skills, weight distribution and core strength. It is now a training tool in all sports and martial arts. It is also used in regular exercise so people can be trained to avoid falls that can be injurious to the ankles and knees.

The balance board looks like a small seesaw except that it has the additional challenge of the pivot point shifting back and forth as the cylinders roll beneath the plank. The objective is to keep the body of the person using it balanced so that the plank will stay over ground and the person will not fall. There are different kinds of balance boards mostly differing in how they move. Exercises are carried out in different positions – sitting, kneeling or standing on the board.

An Alternative to Working out in the Gym

Author: SmartDiets
June 9, 2011

Saturday mornings are aerobics times for me. One and a half hours of stepping up and down, jumping, hopping and dancing. Simple steps performed to music. None of those overly complex choreographies that are difficult to follow. It is a great way of stretching the muscles and burning calories while having fun with friends.

I am finding out that weekly sessions are not enough. While it is simple enough to do at home, it just isn’t the same without somebody leading the session. My solution is to follow workouts on DVD. Working out at home is more convenient. You can fit in a few minutes anytime you have free time. It is also for those who would rather do their exercises in privacy.

Heart Rate in Real Time

Author: SmartDiets
May 16, 2011

It is obvious that heart rate is an important element in exercise. To get the right benefits it is important to pace exercise. You want your heart rate to be at a desired level over time. If your heart rate gets too high your activity can become counterproductive, if it is too low you are not getting any substantial health benefits. That is why heart rate monitors are important.

A heart rate monitor measures a person’s heart rate in real time. They also keep a record for later use. Early models consisted of a monitoring box with a set of electrode leads which attached to the chest. Modern versions comprise two elements – a chest strap transmitter and a wrist receiver. The most popular wrist receiver is the heart rate monitor watch.

Watch Your Step

Author: SmartDiets

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. It does not impact our knees the same way other forms of exercise do. A great way to motivate yourself to pursue walking is through the use of a pedometer. This is a device that is used to calculate the distance you have walked or run. This device senses your movements and counts your steps. Then, the pedometer converts your steps into distance by recording the length of your stride.

You can wear this device all day, every day, or you can wear it only when you go on your daily walks. Either way, I guarantee that you will be motivated to increase your walking, especially if you set goals. You simply clip on the pedometer to your waistband and it will monitor your every step as you go about your daily activity. The key to success in using a pedometer is to set realistic goals and pattern your activity to meet those goals.

The NIH recommends a series of exercises for older adults and seniors. Senior fitness exercises include strength exercises that will strengthen muscles and increase metabolism. This will keep the weight down and keep sugar and cholesterol levels in check. Balance exercises will build leg muscles thereby avoiding falls. It will also help in moving around without help.

Stretching exercises will allow better movement of extremities. When freedom of movement is present, there will more activity options. This will also alleviate boredom. Endurance is built by daily activities such as walking, swimming, biking and even household chores. This should be done with care as the elderly are more prone to getting tired. This is another of Tony Horton’s exercise program. Power 90 consists of six workouts and a sculpting band. It also includes a program guide, calendar and online access to help track progress. The training program is supposed to target specific areas of the body for maximum fat burning and toning results in just 30 minutes per day. The sculpting workouts are designed to tone, firm and strengthen, while the cardio workouts are supposed to burn fat at an accelerated rate.

The workout routines are effective if done as directed. Most users have seen improved muscle tone and weight loss. The exercise definitely contributes to improved health and appearance. However, users are complaining about the outdated music and monotonous routines that make Power 90 a boring program. Users are also wary of taking the weight loss supplements included in the kit.
