The acai palm is one of a variety of species in the family of palm trees. This is cultivated for its fruit and superior hearts of palm. In recent months, the acai berry suddenly became popular when it was marketed as a dietary supplement. Many companies are now selling acai capsules, tablets, juice, instant drink powders and other forms of the product.
The acai fruit or berry is a small and round black-purple drupe measuring about 1 inch or 25 mm in diameter. It looks a lot like a grape with less pulp. Acai is harvested from branched panicles having 500 to 900 fruits. The fruit has a single, large seed which makes up about 80% of the fruit’s size.
