Having a buddy to cheer you on, motivate you, and share tips with, could mean losing more weight faster. But how to you choose a diet buddy?
Decide first whether you want someone who will diet with you, or who will just be your cheerleader and sounding board.
Someone who is committed to you is important when choosing a diet buddy. You don’t want their selfish interests coloring their reaction to your requests for help. A significant other may not be the best choice if that person has to sacrifice their favorite snack to keep you on the diet track. You also may not feel comfortable confiding feelings of unattractiveness, because you’re overweight, to the person you want to feel attracted to you. On the other hand, no one is probably more interested in you and your diet success than your significant other. They may even decide to join you in your diet efforts. Both of you on the same diet means your chances of success improve. A word of caution here: don’t get caught in the permissions trap. Each of you is an adult, you don’t want or need permission from the other to eat. Each of you should know the rules of what you should or shouldn’t eat.
Knowing that your diet buddy is going through the same experience you are has advantages and disadvantages. If they cheat, they may want to convince you to cheat as well, so they don’t feel like they’ve failed. Envy can be a problem as well. If you’re ahead of your weight goal and your diet buddy is a little behind, you might not get the best encouragement.
Differences in the type of diet each of you is on can lead to challenges as well. The high protein low carb diet has opposite restrictions from the eat all the fruits and veggies diet. You may be dying for a piece of fruit while you diet buddy would kill for a cheeseburger.
Guidelines to help you choose a diet buddy.
1. Chose a diet buddy who won’t sabotage your diet efforts.
2. Your diet buddy should be supportive of you, not critical
3. Realize there are times your diet buddy might not be completely available to you
4. Don’t compete with your diet buddy.
Diet buddies can be an advantage when you’re on a weight loss program, pick the right one and you can lose more weight at a faster pace.
